Misunderstandings and Gossip

Okay, first off, I know that this is my first blog, so just notifying you of that :)
Just a few days ago, a girl (I won't say her true name) named Debbie is a bit controlling, and a bit mean. She is in one of my classes, and her friend Shay follows her around like a shadow. Debbie calls out to her saying, "Hey girl! Yeah you with the ugly face!" And Shay doesn't say anything back like "Please don't say that about me." Or, "Stop that, I don't like it when you call me that way." Debbie and I are okay friends, but not after what happened when one of my friends, Desiree, accidentally tells her that I said that Debbie is a bit controlling. Desiree and I have been talking so much that day, and Debbie was acting a bit weirdly around me.
So she came up to me and said, "Shelly, I don't want you talking crap about me, alright? You don't know me, so you don't go saying to Desiree that I'm controlling, 'cuz you don't know me. You don't say anything at all--" I interrupted her.
"I never said anything like that about you!"
"Desiree never lies."
"Well she misunderstood then."
"Desiree didn't misunderstand."
"How do you know that? I never said anything like that about you, I'm not like that."
So Debbie said, "So it goes back to Desiree."
Desiree was in a sticky situation then. I didn't say anything at all about Debbie. AT ALL. And secretly, after jumping the gun, Debbie went to her next class. Desiree apologized to me, saying that she didn't mean to include me, because she had problems with Debbie. Like I said, Desiree agreed that Debbie was too controlling, and that she was a bit of a drama-queen. She bossed Shay around like she's a little servant, and always pulled her down. Straight up to me, Debbie told that I was being clingy to Desiree and that she needed to talk to her and Shay. I was just hanging out with my friend, I can choose for myself where I want to be, and who I can hang out with. Besides, she and Shay could just go away instead of me going away right? It doesn't always have to be "that other person has to go away because we're telling each other important things".
Girls like Debbie really get on my nerves. They've been through drama, unlike me. I'm a kind of person who is just laid back, and wants everyone to be happy and not angry with me. Or at least indifferent if not happy.
Going back to the story. I'm surprised at one thing that I say could be stretched and throttled around with till it goes from "I like Debbie's hair" (Which isn't what I said, I didn't say anything at all about Debbie) to "I don't like Debbie, she's too controlling of Shay" or something of the sort.
It's like that game I used to play in elementary school: Telephone. Where someone says something like, "I want our teacher to give us a pizza party". Then the last person to hear it has to say what they heard from the person before. It will usually turn out convoluted yet similar like, "I want our teacher to live on us piece by piece". Gossip spreads like fire, and is untruthful as anything could be. Or-even more deadlier-gossip could be true. Everyone will know of that horrible mistake you made just a few weeks ago. Or that scandalous truth of this girl flashing her chest at this guy. Goodness, that will be horrible!
Debbie has a lot to learn about other people. She has a prejudice when someone messes with her. Instantly she thinks that when someone makes up a rumor of her, and she finds out who it is, she will go straight up to that person and tell them to stop saying bullshit about her, when really, all it may be is a person who was framed for saying that in the first place. Not all people are gossipers who gossip like old women. I'm a person who doesn't want to have trouble, and just wants everyone to be indifferent, if not total BFFs, with me.
To be honest, I'd like to stop gossip with a firehydrant if that were possible.
